About the City Name Generator

The City Name Generator is a free, no-signup tool that produces monumental city names in six distinct styles: modern metropolis, ancient imperial, sci-fi megacity, fantasy capital, port city, and ruined and lost city. Each style draws on its own curated word bank of prefixes, dynastic roots, stems, and grand suffixes such as -polis, -grad, -burg, -haven, and -spire, more than two hundred components in total, assembled by combination schemes modeled on how real great cities were actually named. Many results arrive with an epithet, a short honorific like "seat of the Ivory Throne" that you can drop straight into a map legend, a gazetteer entry, or a scene.

The tool exists for anyone who has to put convincing names on large invented settlements. Worldbuilders use it to anchor their maps with capitals that feel centuries old. Game masters running tabletop campaigns generate a bench of cities before a session so the party can change continents without stalling the table. This site is operated by Crossroads Technologies LLC, a small independent studio that builds focused, single-purpose web utilities, and it is part of the NamesPlease family of free name generators. The word banks and assembly rules are curated and maintained by us directly. The worked examples on the front page are produced by the exact same code that powers the button and are verified by automated tests, so what the page shows is what the tool truly does.

Privacy

The generator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type or generate is sent to a server, there is no account system, and there are no usage limits.
